## Sewage Pumping Station Alarm Sounding? Why You Need a Tanker Before an Engineer Can Lift the Pump

Domestic and commercial properties positioned lower than the mains sewer or drainage field rely on a **packaged sewage pumping station** (wet well) containing single or twin submersible macerator/vortex pumps. When the red high-level beacon flashes or the indoor panel buzzes, the submersible pump has failed to discharge and raw sewage is rising up the chamber toward the inlet pipe.

| Pumping Station Emergency Service | What Is Included | Response Target | 2026 Typical UK Cost |
| :--- | :--- | :--- | :--- |
| **Wet-Well Vacuum Tanker Pump-Down** | Full extraction of flooded sewage chamber + wash-down of floats | Same-Day / 2–4 Hrs | **£220 – £340** |
| **Tanker Empty + Impeller De-Ragging** | Chamber pump-down + lifting submersible pump to clear wet wipes | Same-Day / Next-Day | **£295 – £440** |
| **Float Switch & Non-Return Valve Service** | Replacing tangled/failed level floats & stuck ball check valve | Within 24–48 Hrs | **£240 – £380** |
| **Replacement Submersible Sewage Pump** | Supply & fit new vortex/grinder pump (Pedrollo, Jung, Flygt, Zoeller) | 24–48 Hrs | **£480 – £950** |

## The 3 Most Common Causes of Pumping Station Alarms

- **1. "Flushable" Wet Wipe Impeller Ragging:** Even heavy-duty grinder pumps stall when fibrous wet wipes, dental floss, or sanitary products wrap around the cutter plate, tripping the thermal overload breaker on your consumer unit.
- **2. Grease Encrusted Float Switches:** Solidified kitchen fat coats the duty and high-level pear floats, preventing them from tilting vertically to trigger the pump start relay.
- **3. Seized Non-Return Flap Valve:** If the brass or cast-iron check valve in the valve chamber jams open, hundreds of litres of pumped sewage from the rising main siphon straight back into the chamber every time the pump stops.
