## How Long Do I Have After My Cesspit High-Level Alarm Goes Off?

A sealed domestic cesspit (cesspool) has no outlet pipe. When the internal float switch tilts and triggers your indoor wall-mounted high-level alarm panel, the tank is typically at **85% to 90% capacity**. For an average UK family of four producing 600–750 litres of wastewater per day, that leaves **only 24 to 72 hours of reserve buffer** before sewage backs up into your lowest ground-floor toilet or shower gully.

| Cesspit Callout Speed | Tanker Volume | When to Choose | 2026 Typical UK Cost |
| :--- | :--- | :--- | :--- |
| **Same-Day Emergency Tanker** | Up to 13,500L (3,000 Gal) | Alarm sounding + slow downstairs drains | **£295 – £440** |
| **Next-Day Priority Tanker** | Up to 13,500L (3,000 Gal) | Alarm just triggered today (24–48hr buffer left) | **£245 – £350** |
| **Standard Pre-Booked Empty** | Up to 13,500L (3,000 Gal) | Booked 5–7 days before alarm level reached | **£215 – £295** |
| **Float Switch Cleaning & Test** | Included during empty | False alarm caused by grease crust on float | **£0 – £45 add-on** |

## 3 Things to Do Immediately When Your Cesspit Alarm Sounds

- **1. Press the Alarm Mute Button (Do Not Switch Off the Mains Fuse):** Silencing the buzzer keeps the red warning LED illuminated so your household remembers to conserve water. Turning off the fused spur disables the float telemetry completely.
- **2. Cut Household Water Consumption by 50%:** Skip baths, hold off on laundry loads, and avoid flushing tissues until the tanker arrives—stretching a 48-hour reserve buffer to 4 days.
- **3. Ask the Tanker Driver to Hose Down the Float Pear:** Solidified cooking fat and wet wipes frequently encrust the counterweight on the float cable, causing the alarm to stick in the "Full" position even after emptying.
